The Nautical Mile
Freeport, NY

Originally home to the Meroke Indians, the area around present-day Freeport was called Raynor's Neck after early European settler Edward Raynor. In 1725, the name South Woods or Great South Woods was adopted, but the names Raynortown or Raynor Town were also used for more than a century. In 1853, residents voted to rename the community Freeport, a variation on Free Port, the nickname given by ship captains who could land cargo without paying customs duties during colonial times. Freeport's first post office opened that same year and it was incorporated in 1892.
